Trend Diabetes ‘proud’ to help develop insulin administration delegation programme

Trend Diabetes is “proud and honoured” to have been asked to participate in developing a nationwide e-learning module for NHS England.

The organisation helped put together the Insulin Administration Delegation Programme for Nursing Associates, Healthcare Assistants, Care Home Staff, as well as their mentors.

The programme covers insulin safety, the types of insulin available, how to correctly inject and hypos.

Trend Diabetes Co-Founder and Co-Director June James said: “We have created this programme that contains key information about administering insulin for the health and care workforce.

“Insulin is a high-risk medicine which if given incorrectly can cause significant health issues. That’s why it’s vital those who have been allocated the task of insulin administration retain a sound knowledge of diabetes and the appropriate practical skills to administer injections safely and correctly using an insulin pen.”

The other Trend Diabetes Co-Founder and Co-Director Debbie Hicks added: “As our population ages, the number of older people with diabetes is rising rapidly and we know that community health services often struggle to meet the needs that these people have.

“Insulin administration delegation is great way to help ease the burden on community care staff, but it’s essential that all staff caring for people with diabetes have the skills, knowledge and competencies to administer insulin safely and correctly, in the right dose and at the right time.

“When we were approached to help with this project by NHS England, we took on the challenge of producing elements of the programme such as the eLearning module and implementation documents. We hope that users will enjoy the learning process as well as taking away crucial knowledge that they will retain for the rest of their working careers.”

Insulin administration delegation is suitable for people living with diabetes who have stable glycaemic control. For those who wish to sign up to take part in the programme, it is currently available via the e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH) website, a Health Education England (HEE) Programme working in partnership with the NHS.

The policy and competency framework will be made accessible in August and further updates will be provided.

The programmes are engaging, interactive and use quality images, video, audio and animation to help users learn and retain knowledge. Content is presented using various templates such as ‘real-life’ scenarios, case studies and ‘knowledge bites’.
